Katie Ross, a Job Developer/Employment Counsellor at Services d’employabilité ACFOMI Employment Services presented to the students on how to access the “Hidden Job Market” in Kingston, Ontario. Some tips included:
- Network. Network. Network. Katie stressed the importance of telling everyone that the students come in contact with that they are looking for work. A lot of the time it is about talking to the right person at the right time as these people may be able to give them valuable insights into jobs they are aware of through their professional network.
- Research companies. More and more companies are not using paid advertisements due to the increased costs associated. Students need to visit the company’s website and talk to key people to see if they are hiring. Also, watch for articles in the newspapers about companies landing new contracts, etc… as they will more than likely be hiring to support the new demand.
- Use social Media: Tell friends on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn that you are looking for work. Employers are always looking for creative and free/low cost ways of promoting an employment opportunity, so keep your message out there!
